YOSHITOSHI TSUKIOKA: Fujiwara no Yasumasa Playing the Flute by Moonlight, 1883 Fujiwara no Yasumasa, a Heian aristocrat, was famed for his artistry on the flute. The tale is that while he was playing, alone in the night fields, he was discovered by a bandit. Captivated by the music, the outlaw was unable to attack what should have been easy prey, but followed Fujiwara home. When Fujiwara stopped playing and noticed his companion, he gave the other man a new set of clothing -- a traditional way of indicating that the recipient had been made a retainer of the donor.
